Yeh Lamhe..

Yash Chopra is no more! :( He just completed 80 years and his last movie 'Jab tak hain jaan' is releasing on Nov 13th. Oh, the irony of it all! Sigh!

Being a Veer-Zaara fanatic that I am, I thought I will write a post.

Who can forget his romantic masterpieces - Silsila, Kabhi Kabhi, Lamhe (yes, i loved that movie), DTPH and more recently Veer-Zaara! I won't talk about Deewar, Daag etc. as they don't fit into the romance genre. His approach to romance, sometimes ahead of his times (Lamhe), sometimes portraying the complexities in relationships (kabhi kabhi, silsila) in such a dignified way is truly marvelous. The women, esp, are strongly etched characters, confident and free-willed too. (rekha, jaya, waheeda, sridevi).

One thing that comes to my mind now is this song - Ek dooje ke vaaste, from DTPH. Check out this lovely song. The theme is so sweet; the diff couples and diff portrayal of love make it a very feel-good kind of a song. :) Posting this song for 1 more reason, for Yash Chopra's cameo! Can you spot him?

Krishna nee begane baaro

Krishna Ganmaasthami is around the corner and I remembered this song from a Kannada movie. I liked it, well, because, you know, it is about krishna and radha, but more importantly, because of the super haTke choreography! Great job really. You can ignore the last few seconds. :-D
Sharing it here. Enjoy!

Song: Krishna nee begane baro

Birthdays are fun!

Skanda's (my nephew) 6th birthday was approaching, and there was a function organized for that. So I took that as an opportunity to bake a cake for him. Since he loves chocolate, I decided on a marble cake (vanilla and chocolate) with chocolate butter cream frosting. Sounds fancy right? :D

This time ditched my oven and used one of Amma's good old reliable griller/cake maker. (forgot the name). The cake came out pretty good and I spent almost an entire evening preparing the icing on the cake! Creaming butter and sugar with a spoon was tiresome! Anyways, the effort was worth it as the kiddo loved it! Even mom, who does not appreciate baked stuff, liked it! Don't have a pic of the cake when it came out of the oven. But there is one with the icing on. It does look amateurish, but hey that's my first attempt ok! Be nice! :-D

And oh! Don't remind me that an 'A' is missing!!

Its raining its pouring.. open the umbrella!

Sid has a slate, the magnetic type, which we get in kid stores now. Its easy to draw and write on it and erase it without the problem of messy powder and stuff. Aah, but nothing beats writing on the black portable blackboard with chalk! Everyone's hidden drawing talent is now in the open. From the typical mountain-sun-waterfall-hut scene to elephants to flowers. The slate has seen it all!

Sid identifies umbrellas and is quite fascinated with it. So I drew an umbrella, the other day, and showed it to him. He identified it instantly, saying 'umm', 'umm' (which in his language means an umbrella!). He then took up the slate and started 'drawing'. He was very focused and after a couple of minutes, he showed his artwork to me and started saying 'umm', 'umm'. Lo, and behold! There was Sid's version of an umbrella. :-D It is really amazing to see him explore the concept of visualizing things and drawing. He'll do great in his art classes (Proud mother wipes off a tear, sniff sniff!)

Of course, I took pics and of course, here they are!

That's him drawing..

..and that's his completed drawing, an umbrella!!!

Music and Romance

R.D. Burman's birthday was yesterday (July 27th). Although there are like a million compositions that I love, i'll post this song today. It is one of my fav romantic number. It is from the movie 'Raampur ka Lakshman'. Lata and Kishore again show why they were the industry's best singers in that era (apart from Rafi, am a big fan!). The soft composition adds to the feel. Well, I love this song! Only bad thing is probably Rekha's hideous makeup, totally spoils the second antara visually!!! Listen to it with your eyes closed. :-D

Song: Gum hain kisi ke pyar mein
Movie: Raampur ka Lakshman
Music Director: R.D.Burman
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar

Lyrics
=====
(I have listened to it so many times, that I can actually write the entire thing on my own. Also while my scripts run, I do have some time at my disposal, so here  you go!)

(humming)
haan, kya kaha?
gum hain kisi ke pyaar mein dil subah shaam
par tumhe likh nahi paaon mein uska naam
haaye raam haaye raam

kuch likha?
haan
kya likha?
oh, gum hain kisi ke pyaar mein dil subah shaam
par tumhe likh nahi paaon mein uska naam
haaye raam haaye raam

accha, aage kya likhoon?
aage...
socha hain ek din mein usse mil ke
keh Daalon apne sab haal dil ke
aur kardoon jeevan uske havaale
phir choDdhe chaahe apna banaale
main toh uska re hua diwaana
ab toh jaisa bhi mera ho anjaam
oh, gum hain kisi ke pyaar mein

likhliya?
haan
zara paDke toh sunaao na
chaaha hain tumne jis bhaawari ko
woh bhi sajanva chaahe tumhi ko
naina uTaaye toh pyar samjho
palkein jhuka de toh ikrar samjho
rakhtein hain kab se chupa chupa ke
kya?
apne hoTon main piya tera naam
oh, gum hain kisi ke pyaar mein....

Ya rabba

Am down with a cold and feeling totally blue. So a sad song today!

Lovely one though. If you thought only Sonu Nigam can squeeze out the emotions in a sad song, think again. Kailash Kher excels in this one. Lovely timing in the movie also. As usual lyrics is brilliant. All in all, a beautiful one. Listen to it even if you are not feeling blue. At the end of it, you will. (evil laughter in the background)

Movie: Salaam-e-Ishq
Music Director: Shankar Ehsaan Loy
Lyricist: Sameer
Singer: Kailash Kher

Lyrics - Well, googled for it and found this --> http://ezeehindilyrics.blogspot.in/2010/06/salaam-e-ishq-lyrics-ya-rabba-lyrics.html - it has the translations too. Enjoy!

Ballebaaz

Sid is walking now!!! Its the most happiest thing one can see, with his tiny legs trying to balance and his hands waving in the air. He walks like a penguin and that IS cute! And he blabbers utter nonsense while he is walking. Looks and sounds very funny!

Well, that's almost stale news now. He has forgotten that he was crawling before. Even if he falls while walking, he gets up and resumes walking, rarely giving in to crawling. It is loads of fun, but we also need to be very careful about where he is going and what he is pulling, lifting etc.

So as usual, now a days, he carries a cricket bat in 1 hand and starts walking and pushing the ball around. We need to pass the ball to him and he starts waving it on the ground and hits the ball. Josh is very impressed with his son's cricketting skills.
This one time, when Sid was happily pushing the ball around, Josh said, and i quote, 'Notice how he does not scavenge the ball, he makes contact with it'!!!!!!! Sheesh! And I think I also heard him comment something about Sid's stance! God save Sid if he is not interested in cricket while growing up.

Pyaar ke kagaz pe..

Ok, so I had a rather tiresome day on Monday travelling the length and breadth of Bangalore! But the bright side was I got to go to my parents' place and spent some quality time with the nephews.

They have their summer vacation and were driving the grandparents crazy. :) So I did a card-making workshop with them..Hehe..talk about spoiling the fun for the boys! The younger one is pretty interested in such stuff, but making the elder one sit though this was quite a challenge. On top of that, they wanted to cut the color-cones (like mehndi cones but filled with paint instead) themselves and made quite a mess with it!! They had very particular tastes when it came to colors that they wanted. (Skanda went orange while Pranav said yellow, but he secretly wanted purple.)

I asked the kids what they wanted on the cards and pat came the reply 'Cheetah'. Ya right, like I was going to draw that! I asked them for something smaller and Skanda said 'Ant'. How innocent and straight-forward! :-) We then settled for a cat on Skanda's card and an apple for Pranav.

And the occasion? It was their father's birthday. How I wish such craft items were available/affordable when we were kids. Sigh!

And oh, all the writing was done by Skanda! :-)

Naam gum jaayega

This is one of my all time favorite songs. No, make it my most favorite song! This song is so peaceful, I feel very calm when I listen to this. Although I must admit, this is one of the very few songs in which a few words and meanings (in the antaras) I did not get!

From the movie 'Kinara' (directed by Gulzar), its been sung amazingly by Lata Mangeshkar and Bhupinder. His makhmali voice is brilliant, but he is often overshadowed by Kishore Kumar and Mohd. Rafi, when it comes to songs of that era.
You need to listen to some of his other brilliant songs too - biti na bitayi raina, do deewane shehar mein, huzoor is kadar, thodi si zamin thoda aasman.

Tune jo na kaha

I had this super old melody which I wanted to post today. But today morning Josh literally forced this song into my head! Now its my earworm and I want to get it out. Here u go.

The song is from the movie 'New York' starring 3 wooden actors. Seriously! But in this song, the emotions Neil Nitin Mukesh shows is so good (in a sad way!). Beautifully done, subtle yet so profound. Esp the last anthara. Neil is talking over the phone, sees Katrina, lowers the phone, keeps seeing her, and a tear just rolls down his cheeks. Totally heart wrenching I say!

And oh! The lyrics. What can I say? Such a common mistake people do in assuming and imagining love. Very nicely penned. Suits the situation so perfectly for both the antaras.

Check it out here. As always the lyrics come first. Enjoy a soulful number on  Friday morning. (ok, almost afternoon, by the time this is published!)

Song: Tune jo na kaha
Movie: New York
Music: Pritam
Lyrics: Sandeep Shrivastava
Singer: Mohit Chauhan

Tune Jo Na Kaha, Mein Woh Sunta Raha
Khamaka Bewaja Khwaab Buntha Raha
Hmmmm Mmm Mmmmmm… Mmm Mmmm

Tune Jo Na Kaha, Mein Woh Sunta Raha
Khamaka Bewaja Khwaab Buntha Raha
Jaane Kiski Humein Lag Gayi Hai Nazar
Is Shehar Mein Na Apna Tikana Raha
Durr Chahat Se Mein Apni Chalta Raha
Khamaka Bewaja Khwaab Buntha Raha

Gar Woh Pehle Se Hai Zyaada, Khud Se Phir Yeh Kiya Wada
Khamosh Nazrein Rahe Bezuban
Hmmmm…Mmm…Mmmm…
Apno Phele Si Baatein Hai, Bolo Tho Lab Thar Tharatein Hai
Raaz Yeh Dil Ka, Na Ho Bayaan
Ho Gaya Ke Aasar Koi Hum Pe Nayi
Humsafar Mein Tho Hai Humsafar Hai Nayi
Durr Jatha Raha, Paas Aatha Raha
Khamaka Bewaja Khwaab Buntha Raha
Hmmm…Mmm…Mmmmm…

Aaya Woh Phir Nazar Aise, Baat Chidne Lagi Phir Se
Aankho Mein Chubtha Kal Ka Dhuwaa
Hmmm..Mmm…Mmm…
Hal Tera Na Hum Sa Hi, Is Khushi Mein Kyun Gham Sa Hi
Basne Laga Kuyn Phir Woh Jahan
Woh Jahan Dur Jisse Gaye Te Nikal
Phir Se Yaadon Ne Kar Di Hai Jaise Pehal
Lamha Beeta Huwa, Dil Dhukata Raha
Khamaka Bewaja Khwaab Buntha Raha

Tune Jo Na Kaha, Mein Woh Sunta Raha
Khamaka Bewaja Khwaab Buntha Raha
Jaane Kiski Humein Lag Gayi Hai Nazar
Is Shehar Mein Na Apna Tikana Raha
Durr Chahat Se Mein Apni Chalta Raha
Bhuj Gayi Aag Thi, Dhaag Jalta Raha

One more morning gone by

Today morning the kiddo was in full josh! He had a very authoritative stance and his limited verbal capability was in full use to confirm the authority. He was calling out to everyone very loudly (with his aaaa, ooooo and other gibberish). Felt like he was demanding that everyone talk only to him and not amongst each other. :-) Felt extra sad to leave him and come to work. Sigh. Keep reminding myself that it is my decision and that I shouldn't complain. So I won't!

Hope everyone's morning was as joyful as mine! If not, then make a note to yourself that you will be joyful, no matter what!

Ok, enough gyan for the day. Now go, do something totally stupid! Like how I collided head-on to the glass door in my office yesterday!! Yeah, totally like a saint-gobain glass ad!

yuhi chala chal rahi

We went to Brindavan Gardens during the long weekend (but just for 1 night). We drove and that meant having the kiddo trampling on me for a good 3-4 hours! :-) Was fun showing him cows, birds (even imaginary ones to distract him!), trees, cars, buses etc.

We stayed at Royal Orchid Hotel, which is inside the Garden itself. So you get a good view of the garden from the sit-out area of the hotel. It was a pretty good place and decent food, so no complaints! Although it rained in the evening, which meant our trip to the garden to view the musical fountains was washed out! (literally ;-))

The garden was in full bloom, and the colors were very pretty. Couldn't dedicate much time to photograph them though, so managed a few quickly before leaving the next morning.
Some pics from the trip below.

Tuesday humor

So this real funny thing happened today. It is my mom's birthday. No!! that's not funny.
The funny thing happened when I called her. After completing the 'happy birthday' formalities, she told me that she has asked my father to get chocolates for her grandkids (my 2 mischievous nephews).

She further explained - '5-star matthe lollipop thangonDbanni andhe. Aadre school indha bandmele 5-star koDthini. Lollipop evening mele koDodhu. Swalpa time aadhru adhanna thintha sumne irthaare!!'

(Translation:I have asked him to get 5-star and lollipop. I will give them the 5-star after they come from school. Will not show the lollipop until evening. At least they will spend some time silently in the evening, eating the lollipop!!')

baby-time

Summer has arrived and with that we enter a new phase of baby managing and caring! Lots to think about, lots to explore and lots to learn. Other than that the kiddo has learnt a few tricks and few necessary skills. :)
  • He is 10 months now and super-fast in crawling. We literally have to run behind him to catch him.
  • He gets up and stands without support for around 10-20 seconds. Not yet walking. Makes me realize again and again that we really take a lot for granted!
  • He can go on and on blabbering utter nonsense (to us that is) with his 'na na na na pa pa pa ma ma ma ta ta ta'. He has started to discover that he can utter complicated sounds and syllables and explores that relentlessly. Very delightful to hear.
  • He has started imitating sounds and when someone coughs, he imitates that too! It looks like he is teasing them.
  • He tries to imitate actions too and observes everything we do very closely. Like drumming fingers on some surface, clicking fingers, clapping (which he now knows properly).
  • He can recognize objects (his toys mainly) which he has used from a long time. You can ask him 'Siddhant, where is the red car?' and he stops what he is doing, looks around, spots the red car and then goes towards it (uttering some sounds) and picks it. He then triumphantly looks at whoever asked that to him and shows it. Then the person has to clap and acknowledge that and so does everyone else in the room. The same repeats for most of his toys.
  • His grandparents have thought him a trick or two too. When you ask him 'Siddhant yaaru?', he starts patting his tummy. He does the same, even when we use nicknames or something like muddhu, bangara etc. :)
  • He plays peek-a-boo with his mother's dupatta or his blanket. When you do 'Siddhant elli?', he quickly pulls the cloth above his eyes and waits. Then we are about to say 'illi', he drops the cloth. Quite dramatic I must say. :)
  • As before, he loves to go out and makes a very sad face (closing his eyes, and going 'eeee') when someone is at the door and does not pick him.

In all, lot of time is spent playing with the toddler and it sure is fun!

And oh, saving the best for the last! His first tooth has slightly emerged. Yeaahhh!! finally!
That also means, he would want to put everything in his mouth now, so its time now to remove all the small objects from his reach.

...And since each day's the same way...There's no longing for the past....

(don't know from where I found this one, but it was safely tucked away in my collection, stumbled upon it today and thought i'll share it. Beautifully written)

When tomorrow starts without me
And I'm not there to see,
If the sun should rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me;

I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did today,
While thinking of the many things,
We didn't get to say.

I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too;

But when tomorrow starts without me,
Please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name,
And took me by the hand,

And said my place was ready,
In heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind
All those I dearly love.

But as I turned to walk away,
A tear fell from my eye
For all my life, I'd always thought,
I didn't want to die.

I had so much to live for,
So much left yet to do,
It seemed almost impossible,
That I was leaving you.

I thought of all the yesterdays,
The good ones and the bad,
I thought of all the love we shared,
And all the fun we had.

If I could relive yesterday,
Just even for a while,
I'd say good-bye and kiss you
And maybe see you smile.

But then I fully realized,
That this could never be,
For emptiness and memories,
Would take the place of me.

And when I thought of worldly things,
I might miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you, and when I did,
My heart was filled with sorrow.

But when I walked through Heaven's gates,
I felt so much at home.
When God looked down and smiled at me,
From His great golden throne,

He said, "This is eternity,
And all I've promised you.
Today your life on earth is past,
But here life starts anew.

"I promise no tomorrow,
But today will always last,
And since each day's the same way
There's no longing for the past.

"You have been so faithful,
So trusting and so true.
Though there were times
You did some things
You knew you shouldn't do.

"But you have been forgiven
And now at last you're free.
So won't you come and take my hand
And share my life with me."

So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart,
For every time you think of me,
I'm right here, in your heart.

Tuesday blues

Listening to old melodies on youtube. Started off with one of my all time fav song 'Is Mod Se', proceeded to 'Tujse Narazza nahin'. Then started searching for songs that I haven't heard much and found this one. 'Kisi raahan pe'. One of the main reasons I had not heard this song properly was that it was sung by Mukesh. Yes, I don't like his voice. But leaving aside that tiny aspect, the song is pretty good. Simple, soothing and very nice lyrics.

kisi raah mein, kisi mod par
kahin chal na dena tuu chhod kar
mere hamasafar, mere humsafar

kisi haal mein, kisi baat par
kahin chal na dena tuu chhod kar
mere hamasafar, mere humsafar

savere savere

So I said 'good morning, you are 9 months now baby' to my kid today and Josh quickly added '9 months in, 9 months out!'
